The Rainforest Alliance: it’s a quality thing

by Amber Johnson

I love chocolate. But here at Dream Chocolate, we love more than just chocolate. We want to make a difference. As Dream Chocolate President Kay Johnson says, “We’re about doing the right thing.” One way we work to do the right thing is through the Rainforest Alliance. The Rainforest Alliance is an organization working to preserve the rainforests by showing businesses and farmers that taking care of the environment and a company’s employees is profitable for everyone. Their mission statement is “the Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.”

The Rainforest Alliance gives out their certification seal to products that have been grown responsibly. This not only means that the growth of the products didn’t hurt the environment but also that the workers were treated well and paid fairly. Products affiliated with the Rainforest Alliance must meet the highest standards. Companies affiliated with Rainforest Alliance have to pay the fair price for an extremely high-quality product, even if they could get away with paying less for a little lower quality.

An all-natural product with the Rainforest Alliance is grown responsibly but some herbicides and pesticides can be used on all-natural products. Only specific herbicides and pesticides can be used because they can’t hurt the Amazon butterflies. At Dream, we sell both Rainforest Alliance certified all-natural and organic chocolates but more of ours are organic.

But really, this post is not about our chocolate. It’s about quality and showing you that sometimes it’s worth it to buy the more expensive product, whether you’re looking at our chocolates or the toilet paper in the grocery store. Quality is important, sometimes you have to pay a little more but that’s when you get to answer the question for yourself: What kind of a difference do I want to make today?
